PROFESSOR ROBERT BARRON (2018, Promotion to Full Professor)
In 2018, my CCNY Theatre Department colleagues once again ignored the CCNY tenure/promotion guidelines.
The CCNY Governance Plan clearly state that:
“FACULTY TENURE, CCE, AND PROMOTION PROCEDURES
Promotion Procedures
…There shall be established in each department promotion committees to consider promotions for each rank, including full professor. All members of the department of higher rank shall be included on the promotions committee of a faculty member who applies for promotion. The department chairperson shall be the chairperson of each promotions committee…”
My colleagues did not abide by the above-mentioned guidelines because I was not allowed to serve on Professor Barron’s 2018 promotion to full professor committee, in spite of the fact that I was a full professor at the time.
My colleagues hid the fact that Barron had been promoted to full professor from me for over five years. I inadvertently discovered his new rank in the summer of 2023.
When I eventually saw the cv that Barron submitted for his 2018 promotion to full professor, I was genuinely stunned by how he had shamelessly "embellished" his professional credentials with:
-
Productions at low-level community theatres and bars;
-
Productions whose running times were between 10 and 55 minutes long;
-
Revivals of productions that were listed two and three times in his cv;
-
CCNY productions done with his students;
-
And other fraudulent, misleading, and unethical information.
Barron's Embellished Directing Credits
NOTE: This is a Low budget short film that was never produced or distributed.
It was simply downloaded to Venmo.
Consequently, this is not the level of creative work that should be included in a tenure/promotion cv and Barron knows it. This short film was not released in movie theatres or online on Netflix/HBO etc. Rather, It was merely downloaded to Venmo.
Running Time = 7 Minutes
Two Community Theatre Productions
Revivals listed Numerous Times
Running Time = 10 Minutes
Performed at a bar in Kingston, NY
Running Time = 10 Minutes
Performed at at bar in Kington, NY.
One Un-produced Short Film
NOTE: Barron does not divulge in his cv the fact that the running times for these two productions were only 10 minutes each. Nor did he state that they were performed in a bar.
Insofar as the venue is concerned, the CCNY Tenure/Promotion Guidelines clearly state that:
"Venues of public displays or performances, including the nature of the venue
(e.g., invited, juried, selected competitively, as appropriate, with a description
of procedures for selection), sponsoring organizations and/or other relevant
information that will provide perspective on the relative stature of the venue."
Barron conceals the, "nature " and "stature" of the venue" in this instance by not acknowledging the fact that the production was performed in a bar.

A Personal Perspective
MISS NELSON IS MISSING
NOTE: The same production appears three times in Barron's Directing cv.
Running Time = About 50 Minutes
ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE...
NOTE: The same production appears three times in Barron's Directing cv.
Running Time = About 50 Minutes
ALEXANDER WHO'S NOT NOT NOT...
NOTE: The same production appears twice in Barron's Directing cv.
Running Time = About 50 Minutes
NOTE: Barron unabashedly attempts to embellish the number of productions in his cv by listing the revivals of his shows in a way that makes them appear to be original productions.
Barron directed each of the children's shows above only once. In subsequent years, TheatreworksUSA (The producing company) revived these shows. They use the original production's, sets, costumes, props, music, choreography and blocking to remount the shows listed above.
Barron should have made some distinction between the original production that took 4-5 weeks to rehearse and the subsequent revivals listed above that took only about 5-7 days to rehearse and zero time to design, because the costumes, sets, props etc. were simply taken out of storage for these revivals.
Two CCNY Theatre Department Productions with his student actors
NOTE: It is outrageous that Barron uses two of his CCNY productions to pad his cv. A promotion/tenure cv should showcase work done off-campus. Productions that Barron did on the CCNY campus with his students in the Theatre Department course called THTR330 do not count as off-campus creative activity. Barron and his promotion committee should have known this and deleted these productions from his cv.
One Production That was originally staged 25 years ago.
NOTE: The Guidelines state that only projects completed from 2012-2018 (7 years after his last promotion) should be included in Barron's 2018 cv.
This is clearly a revival of a show that Barron staged over twenty years ago. A production that was originally mounted in 1998 falls well outside the CCNY tenure/promotion guidelines that limits Barron to using works created from 2012-2018.
